Do I have a gold or bronze?
So accuired a small flat metal plate. It features an eagle and a sort of ridge below eagle. German is also writing about the crest. On the side of his marked MUENCHEN OTTO and back that is stamped 10.47. What I have and is bronze or gold or something? Thanks in advance: D
Gold has a very special physical properties, is very dense. Twice as dense as lead. Therefore, an effective way to identify if something was gold or bronze would be the weight that can be calculated by the weight of the object in the air and water, the difference in weight of displaced water would therefore provides an accurate measurement of volume. If you do not have a precise means of measuring the weight, you can use a simple scale, suspend a known sample of gold at one end and the item to be tested in the other and adjust the fulcrum of the scale until both sides balance then dip both ends of the scale in the water, if the scale is balanced then the samples have densities equal, if the balance is out of balance, then they have the same density. The principle is the main Archmedes and is the basis of the story where Archmedes runs naked through the city shouting "Eureka."
